Built by Service. Forged by the Fight.
Detective. Army veteran. Federal court-recognized drug-trafficking expert. Instructor. Author. Health and wellness coach.
I’m Orion “Bad Karma” Mata. I built Bad Karma Coaching for veterans, first responders, and high-stress professionals who know how to show up when it counts, but may be carrying the weight of that responsibility long after the shift ends.
For more than three decades, service has shaped my life. I have 31 years of combined police, military police, tactical, and investigative experience. I know the discipline, mission focus, and loyalty that these professions demand. I also know that the same armor that helps you do difficult work can make it hard to be present when you get home. This is a place to take an honest look at that without shame, without pretending, and without doing it alone.
A Career Built on Responsibility
I began my career in the U.S. Army Military Police Corps with the 705th Military Police Battalion at Fort Leavenworth. Over my time as an Army MP, I served as a corrections specialist, Special Reaction Team entry-team member, designated marksman/observer, and team leader. I was also the Chief Defensive Tactics Instructor for a battalion of more than 500 soldiers and taught pistol, shotgun, and rifle firearms skills. The Army taught me that preparation matters, people matter, and leadership means being accountable for the person beside you.
Since March 2004, I have served with the Belton Police Department in patrol, master patrol, school resource officer, corrections and jail supervision, detective, and shift-supervision assignments. I currently serve as a detective and have remained involved in roles that
demand clear judgment and steady execution: Special Reaction Team operator, police sniper/marksman, firearms instructor, angemaster, and defensive tactics instructor.
In October 2015, I was assigned to a Federal Narcotics Task Force. My work includes long-term, complex narcotics investigations, surveillance, undercover operations, informant handling, controlled purchases, warrant preparation, and coordinated operations. I am federally recognized as a drug-trafficking expert with federal-court experience. That work has required patience, attention to detail, teamwork, and the ability to make sound decisions under pressure, qualities I bring to every coaching conversation.
Training That Supports the Work
My professional background informs how I teach and coach: prepare carefully, communicate clearly, and follow through. My work as a health and wellness coach brings those standards together with the habits that helped me rebuild my own life. A few foundations of that work include:
• Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice, concentration in Management — Universityof Phoenix
• Member, National Criminal Justice Honor Society
• Current firearms instructor, rangemaster, and defensive tactics instructor
• Certified in individual and group crisis management
• Instruction experience in firearms, defensive tactics, patrol and undercover topics,
fentanyl awareness, emotional regulation, family connection, health and wellness, and combating hypervigilance
My continuing education includes instructor development, rangemaster development, active-shooter instruction, defensive-tactics systems, advanced SWAT and tactical operations, tactical medicine, surveillance, and financial-investigation training. I have also served as a team lead in clandestine-laboratory operations. These experiences have reinforced the importance of preparation, adaptable plans, and responsibility for the people around you.
My professional affiliations include the National Tactical Officers Association, National Law Enforcement Firearms Instructor Association, Missouri Narcotics Officers Association, National Rifle Association, and NRA Law Enforcement Instructor Association. Staying connected to the profession matters to me because there is always more to learn and more
to pass on.
I believe strong instruction should be useful on Monday morning, not just impressive on paper. Whether I am teaching a class or coaching someone through a hard week, I focus on clear standards, honest communication, and the next right action.
Why I Built Bad Karma Coaching
I did not build this program from the sidelines. I built it because the job, the pressure, and the way I was coping took a toll on my health and my relationships. I have faced PTSD, anxiety, and depression. I gained weight. I watched parts of my life and relationships suffer
while I stayed locked into survival mode.
Getting better was not a one-time decision or a clean, simple turnaround. It meant getting into therapy, doing the physical work, and being honest about what was not working. I lost 95 pounds and became stronger physically and mentally, but the bigger lesson was not about the number on a scale. It was about rebuilding focus, values, emotional presence, and reliability. It was about becoming more available to the people who matter most.
I do not believe you need to be shamed into action. I do believe you deserve the truth, a real plan, and people who will stay in the fight with you. There is a difference between being hard on yourself and holding yourself accountable. Bad Karma Coaching is built for the second one.
One Notch at a Time
One Notch at a Time is an eight-week, team-accountability reset for veterans, first responders, and high-stress professionals, men and women who are ready to put consistent effort back into their health, habits, and home life. The program is not a generic workout plan or a promise of an overnight fix. It is a structured space to work on fitness, nutrition, daily habits, emotional presence, and family connection. You will have weekly roundtables, daily check-ins, and a team that understands the demands of service and high-stress work. At the start of the program, participants schedule a wellness check with a culturally competent therapist. The goal is bigger than a better physique. I want to help you rebuild your baseline, reset your focus, and return to the values that matter to you. That may look like training with purpose, preparing food instead of running on fumes, checking in with your team, listening better at home, or learning to slow down before stress takes over the room. We take it one notch at a time—because lasting change is built through repeatable actions. Coaching can support personal growth and accountability, but it complements rather than replaces care from a licensed mental-health or medical professional.
Service Beyond the Badge
My work is important to me, but it is not the whole story. I am a Michigan native, a husband to Heather, a father of four, and “Pops” to three grandchildren. I live in the Kansas City suburbs, and my family keeps the purpose of this work real. I am also a custom woodworker and a writer. I lead the Shepherds Public Safety Motorcycle Club, serve as a DeemedFit and Bucked Up ambassador, and help raise funds for Friends in Service of Heroes (FISH). Those commitments are extensions of the same belief behind Bad Karma Coaching: service does not end when the uniform comes off.
Writing gives me another way to tell stories. I am the author of Murderous Daydreams, a psychological thriller, and Our Friend Abe, a children’s story. You can learn more about my writing at Bad Karma Publications.
The Next Right Step
If you are tired of carrying the whole load alone, you do not have to have every answer before you start. You just need the willingness to take an honest inventory and make the next right move.
